Chapter 9 - Alfredo Escapes From The Forest

Alfredo ran from the wood and joined the pack of hunting dogs. Church bells were sounding for the loss of the Prince. He slept in a barn on straw with the other dogs. In the feasting halls he heard nobles plotting against the King. He heard the poor cursing the King and all the lords for their selfish cruelty and endless wars. The dog-keepers were brutal and kept the dogs hungry so they would be vicious in the hunt. He slept a little and knew what he must do.

As soon as the barn door opened he ran to the forest. He knew no human could find the secret clearing. As a dog he could follow his own scent and that of his horse from the previous day. As he ran into the clearing and looked up at the black sky of stars he lost all sense of weight and flew on and on into the future.
